The New York City Pediatric
Viral Hepatitis Network was established in July 2001 to focus on chronic
hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C infection in children. The mission of the
New York City Pediatric Viral Hepatitis Network is to reduce the burden of disease
from chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C in children using a centralized
and coordinated system of health care providers and developing close partnerships
with community-based organizations. |
 |
The goals of the Network are to:
- Create a support network and establish linkages for clinical practitioners
and centers in hepatitis and liver research and practice.
- Develop a centralized repository and registry for clinical information
and specimen storage.
- Establish evidence-based research protocols on prevention and treatment
guidelines for children with hepatitis.
- Improve access to the state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment tools for
underserved populations at high risk for hepatitis.
- Provide education and technical assistance to health care providers and
local communities.
Through a centralized system and community partnerships, the Network can
accomplish the following long-term objectives:
- Elucidate the epidemiology and natural history of HBV and HCV;
- Disseminate expertise in diagnosis and management; and
- Devise improved treatment strategies in children infected with chronic
HBV and/or chronic HCV.
